Background of the study
Civic education is fundamental in fostering informed citizenship and social responsibility among young learners. In primary schools in Katsina, traditional teaching methods often involve rote learning and passive reception of information, which may not effectively instill civic values. A digital animation system can transform the learning experience by providing engaging, visually dynamic content that illustrates key civic concepts such as democracy, rights, responsibilities, and community participation (Adeola, 2023). Through animated narratives, interactive characters, and simulated scenarios, students can better understand abstract civic ideas and see practical applications in real-life contexts. The use of digital animations also facilitates differentiated instruction, catering to various learning styles and making complex information accessible and enjoyable for young minds (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, the integration of multimedia content can stimulate critical thinking, promote discussion, and encourage active participation in civic matters. However, challenges such as high production costs, limited technical resources in primary schools, and the need for curriculum alignment with cultural and social contexts may hinder widespread adoption. This study aims to design a digital animation system specifically for teaching civic education in primary schools in Katsina, assessing its impact on student engagement and learning outcomes, and proposing strategies to overcome implementation challenges (Chinaza, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Primary schools in Katsina face challenges in delivering effective civic education due to traditional teaching methods that rely on static content and teacher-centered instruction. These methods often fail to capture the interest of young learners, leading to poor retention of civic knowledge and a lack of understanding of their roles and responsibilities as citizens. Although digital animation can provide an engaging and interactive alternative, its integration into the primary school curriculum is limited by several factors. High costs of developing quality animated content, limited access to advanced digital tools, and insufficient teacher training in multimedia pedagogy are significant barriers. Furthermore, ensuring that the animated content is culturally appropriate and aligns with the national civic education curriculum presents additional challenges. These issues contribute to a learning environment where students are not adequately prepared to participate in civic life. This study seeks to investigate these challenges by designing a digital animation system for civic education, evaluating its effectiveness in enhancing learning, and recommending strategies for its successful adoption in primary schools in Katsina (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To design a digital animation system tailored for teaching civic education.

  2. To assess the system’s impact on student engagement and comprehension.

  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for effective implementation.

Research questions

  1. How does digital animation improve the teaching of civic education concepts?

  2. What are the main challenges in developing and implementing such a system?

  3. How can teacher training be enhanced to support digital animation tools?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores innovative multimedia approaches to enhance civic education in primary schools. The findings will provide actionable insights for educators and policymakers to create engaging, culturally relevant digital content that improves civic understanding among young learners (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the design and evaluation of a digital animation system for civic education in primary schools in Katsina, Katsina State. Limitations include high development costs and limited access to digital resources.

Definitions of terms

  • Digital Animation System: A computer-based platform that creates animated content for educational purposes.

  • Civic Education: Instruction aimed at developing knowledge of civic values and democratic practices.

  • Interactive Learning: A method that actively involves students in the learning process through multimedia tools.
